Perhaps one of the most widely known cosmetic dental procedures currently available is the teeth whitening procedure. This is perhaps not surprising as it is not only one of the most affordable but is also fast acting and with instant results.
Discoloured teeth can look unattractive, and whilst we may be able to delay the onset of discolouration through good oral care and avoiding teeth staining foods such as tobacco and red wine, eventually everyone’s teeth will darken in colour as they get older.
Whilst it is the inner part of the tooth that darkens, this often gives the appearance of yellowing teeth which an increasing number of people are looking to rectify.
Teeth whitening procedure
As it is the inner part of the tooth that is discoloured, no amount of toothpaste will correct this problem. Although some teeth whitening toothpastes are available; due to safety laws, the quantity of the whitening ingredient in these is small and the effects likewise.

The procedure is non-invasive and painless, although a little extra sensitivity may be felt for a short time afterwards, however this is temporary and soon goes.
Before the procedure starts, the patient’s gums and lips will be protected with a special guard. This prevents burning to the soft tissue (this can be a risk with ‘at home’ kits).
The whitening gel is then applied to the teeth and activated using a special light which helps to speed up the whitening process. This is then left on the patient’s teeth for approximately one hour before being removed.
The results of a teeth whitening procedure can be quite dramatic and instantly noticeable. Many patients at our dental practice in E12 are surprised at the difference that this speedy and straightforward procedure can achieve.
Whilst a teeth whitening procedure offers excellent results in most cases, it should be noted that heavily stained or discoloured teeth, such as those of a long term heavy smoker, may only show limited improvement and dental veneers may be a preferable option in some situations.
